Jon Jones
Jon “Bones” Jones is widely regarded as the greatest mixed martial artist in the history of the UFC. A two division world champion with a 28 and 1 professional record, his career stands as one of the most decorated and discussed in the history of combat sports.
Early Life: A Family Built for Competition
Jonathan Dwight Jones was born on July 19, 1987 in Rochester, New York, before relocating with his family to the Binghamton area at the age of 10. He grew up in a household centred on faith, with his father serving as a pastor at Mount Sinai Church of God in Christ. Athletic excellence ran throughout the family. His older brother Arthur Jones and younger brother Chandler Jones both went on to play defensive line in the NFL, making the Jones household one of the most accomplished sporting families in American history.
Jones excelled as a wrestler in high school, capturing a state title and earning All American honours, before continuing his wrestling career at Iowa Central Community College, where he won a national junior college championship. He later transferred to Morrisville State College to study Criminal Justice before leaving school to pursue a career in mixed martial arts full time.
The Rise to UFC Gold
Jones made his professional MMA debut in April 2008 and built an undefeated record of 6 and 0 within his first few months as a professional, finishing every opponent he faced. His rapid rise caught the attention of the UFC, and he made his promotional debut against Andre Gusmao that same year.
What followed was one of the most dominant runs the sport has ever witnessed. On March 19, 2011, at just 23 years old, Jones stopped Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 to become the youngest champion in UFC history, a record that still stands today. He went on to defend the light heavyweight title a record eight times during his first reign, defeating an extraordinary list of opponents including Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira and Daniel Cormier.
His September 2013 battle with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 is widely remembered as one of the greatest fights in UFC history, earning Fight of the Night honours and a later induction into the UFC Hall of Fame’s Fight Wing.
Records, Resilience and Redemption
Jones holds the UFC record for most title fight wins in history with 15, along with the record for most total title fight appearances. Across his career he has defeated 14 former world champions, a number unmatched by any other fighter in the history of the sport. Remarkably, Jones has never been finished inside the Octagon, with his lone professional loss coming via a controversial disqualification against Matt Hamill early in his career, a result many in the sport continue to dispute to this day.
His path was not without adversity. Between 2015 and 2017, Jones faced a series of legal and disciplinary challenges that resulted in him losing his title on multiple occasions through commission action rather than inside competition. Each time, he returned to the Octagon and reclaimed his position at the top of the division, reclaiming the light heavyweight championship in December 2018 with a stoppage win over Gustafsson.
Conquering a Second Division
After voluntarily vacating the light heavyweight title in 2020 to pursue a new challenge, Jones spent several years preparing for a move to heavyweight. That patience paid off in spectacular fashion. On March 4, 2023, at UFC 285, Jones submitted Ciryl Gane via guillotine choke in the first round to capture the vacant UFC Heavyweight Championship, becoming just the eighth fighter in UFC history to win titles in two different weight classes.
He defended the heavyweight title on November 16, 2024 at UFC 309, stopping former two time heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic via strikes in the third round at Madison Square Garden in New York City, in front of one of the largest crowds in UFC history.
A Legacy Without Equal
Throughout his career, Jones spent a record 1,743 days as the UFC’s number one pound for pound fighter, a span unmatched by any other athlete in the promotion’s history. His technical influence on the sport has shaped a generation of fighters, with champions across multiple divisions citing his approach to distance management, grappling transitions and fight intelligence as a blueprint for modern mixed martial arts.
Few athletes in any combat sport have combined Jones’s level of dominance, longevity and statistical achievement. Whatever chapter comes next in his career, his place among the greatest competitors the sport has ever produced is already secured.
